Technical Racing Suits: Everything You Need to Know

From bonded seams to baby powder. Kneeskins to jammers. Your full guide to owning and racing in a tech suit.

So What Exactly Is a Technical Suit?

A technical racing suit (or "tech suit") is a high-performance swimsuit engineered purely for race day. Every material choice, every panel, every seam is designed to help you move through the water as fast as possible when it counts the most.

Think of it like this: you train in your everyday suit the same way a footballer trains in their training kit. But when the whistle blows on match day, they pull on the proper strip. Your tech suit is your match-day strip. It's not for training. It's for racing.

Every tech suit used in sanctioned competition must be approved by World Aquatics, the global governing body for competitive swimming. Just like FIFA approves the match ball, or Formula 1 governs what cars are legal on the grid, World Aquatics ensures every swimmer competes on a level playing field.

      ๐ŸŽ๏ธ

      The F1 Analogy

Every F1 car runs on the same fuel. But aerodynamics win championships when fractions of a second separate the podium. Your tech suit is your aerodynamics.

      โšฝ

      The FIFA Analogy

World Aquatics approves every tech suit in competition, just as FIFA approves the match ball. Everyone plays on the same field. It's about fairness at the highest level.

      ๐Ÿ…

      The Athlete Is Everything

The best swimmers in the world train in basic suits every single day. The tech suit doesn't create speed. It reveals the speed you've already built. Your training is the foundation. The suit is the finishing touch.

      ๐Ÿ’ก The Proton Saga Analogy

Here's a great way to think about it. If you turned up to the F1 grid in a Proton Saga, would the approved F1 fuel even matter? Not at all. The fuel only makes a difference when the cars are already in the same league. That's exactly why World Aquatics approved suits matter at the elite and qualifying level. When athletes are closely matched, every legal edge counts. At your weekend club race? Wear whatever you like and swim your heart out. ๐ŸŽ‰

"The tech suit doesn't create speed. It reveals the speed you've already built. Your training is the foundation. The suit is what you wear when it's time to show what you're made of." โ€” SWIMSHOP2U, eight years poolside ๐Ÿ’™

      Bonded Seams vs Stitched Seams

One of the first things you'll notice when comparing tech suits is the seam construction. Both types are used in World Aquatics approved suits. Here is what the difference actually means for your swimming:

      Premium

      ๐Ÿ”ฅ Bonded / Ultrasonic Seams

      • Panels are fused together with heat or ultrasonic welding. No needle or thread.
      • The join is nearly invisible and completely flush with the fabric surface.
      • Minimal seam profile = minimal drag at every edge of the suit.
      • Feels like a second skin, smooth all over.
      • Generally found in higher-end tech suits.
      Classic

      ๐Ÿชก Stitched Seams

      • Use flat-lock or multi-needle stitching to keep seams as flat and low-profile as possible.
      • Still significantly flatter than standard swimwear construction.
      • Can offer slightly more flexibility and durability in high-movement zones.
      • Used in both entry-level and high-performance tech suits.
      • Some suits combine both: bonded panels with stitching at high-stress points for strength.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro tip from the brands: US Masters Swimming notes that some suits combine techniques: bonded panels with reinforced stitching at key stress areas. You get the aerodynamic benefit of bonded seams with the structural strength of stitching where it matters most.

      ๐Ÿ”” Swim Parents: Read This

Why This Seam Distinction Really Matters: The 12 & Under Tech Suit Rule

This is one of the most important things a swim parent needs to know, and unfortunately one of the most commonly missed.

In the USA, USA Swimming introduced a rule effective September 1, 2020: swimmers aged 12 and under are banned from wearing full technical suits at sanctioned competitions. The reason? Two very good ones:

      ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Lower the cost burden Tech suits can cost anywhere from RM500โ€“RM2,500+. The rule removes the pressure on families to spend big at young ages where development matters far more than equipment.
      ๐ŸŠ
Keep the focus on the swimmer At 12 and under, races should be won by training and talent, not by whose parents bought the most expensive suit. The sport comes first.

๐Ÿ“‹ Under the USA Swimming rule, a suit is classified as a technical suit, and therefore restricted for 12 & under, if it has:

      • ๐ŸšซAny bonded or taped seams, regardless of the fabric or silhouette of the suit
      • ๐ŸšซWoven fabric extending past the hips, regardless of seam type

This means: even a suit that looks like a simple training suit can be classified as a tech suit and restricted, purely because of its bonded seams. This is exactly why understanding seam types matters when you're buying for a young swimmer.

      โš ๏ธ

Important for Malaysian swimmers: This specific rule is from USA Swimming and applies to USA Swimming sanctioned meets. Malaysian swimmers should always check the rules of their specific competition and governing body. Malaysia Aquatics rules may differ. When in doubt, ask your coach or meet organiser before purchasing. It is always the swimmer's responsibility to compete in compliant swimwear.

      Kneeskin or Jammer: Which One?

Jammer technical racing suit for male swimmers, SWIMSHOP2U Malaysia

      Jammer

      For Male Swimmers

Covers from the waist to just above the knee. Provides compression along the hip flexors, quads, and hamstrings: the primary power muscles in swimming. Fitted close to the body with a drawstring waist.

      • โœ“
World Aquatics Approved Fabric Lightweight and hydrophobic. Water rolls right off instead of soaking in. The suit stays light and slippery for the full race. That matters most at the 75-metre mark when fatigue sets in.
      • โœ“
Compression That Works For You Multi-panel construction aligns your muscles and shapes your body into a more streamlined position. You hold your form longer, fatigue less, and finish strong. Research cited by SwimOutlet suggests tech suits can help reduce race times by approximately 1โ€“3%.
      • โœ“
Race-Day Investment A tech suit costs 5โ€“10ร— more than a training suit. That reflects genuine engineering: advanced fabrics, heat-bonded construction, and World Aquatics approval. When you feel one on, you understand immediately.
      • โœ“
Built for Racing, Not Training With proper care, a tech suit gives approximately 8โ€“10 great performances. The materials that make it fast simply aren't built for chlorine every single day. Save it for race day. That's exactly how the pros do it.
      โœ…

Check If Your Suit Is World Aquatics Approved

Before any sanctioned competition, verify your suit is on the official approved list. World Aquatics maintains a searchable database. Look up your brand or model in seconds.

๐Ÿ” Check Approved Swimwear Database โ†—
      Important distinction

The World Aquatics label means it is legal. It does not mean it is fast.

This is one of the most misunderstood things in competitive swimwear, and it is worth being direct about it.

Any brand can submit a swimsuit for World Aquatics approval. The process costs around โ‚ฌ1,000 per model, plus fees per fabric type. Pass the material and thickness tests, and your suit gets the label and goes on the approved list. That label confirms the suit is legal to race in. It does not confirm the suit has any meaningful performance benefit over a good training suit.

      What the approved label guarantees

      • Textile fabric only: no rubber or polyurethane
      • Maximum 0.8mm fabric thickness
      • Legal coverage (waist-to-knee / shoulder-to-knee)
      • Listed on the World Aquatics approved database

What a genuine performance tech suit adds

      • Hydrophobic coating that actively repels water throughout the race
      • Bonded or ultrasonic seams, minimal drag at every panel edge
      • Multi-panel compression mapping targeting specific muscle groups
      • Significant R&D investment: flume-tested, athlete-tested, stroke-specific

A budget brand can pass the World Aquatics material tests and earn the approval label while offering little to no performance benefit over a standard competition suit. The label is a legal minimum, not a performance guarantee. When in doubt, ask us and we will give you an honest answer about what you are actually buying.

Can I Wear a Training Suit to a Competition?

      โš ๏ธ Important

Always check the specific rules and regulations of your competition before race day. It is the swimmer's responsibility to comply. Rules vary between meets, levels, and governing bodies.

At most local and developmental level races in Malaysia, wearing a training swimsuit is absolutely fine. When no swimmer has a competitive advantage over another, the World Aquatics approved suit requirement simply isn't in play. Show up, race hard, and enjoy every metre. ๐ŸŠ

The approved suit rule matters when the level of competition means the equipment could actually separate athletes who are closely matched. Think state championships, national qualifiers, and international meets. That's when the level playing field rule exists to protect every swimmer.

Back to the Proton Saga on the F1 grid: at that level, the car absolutely matters. At your weekend club race, everyone is just there to swim fast and have fun. ๐Ÿ˜„

When in doubt, ask your coach. They know the meet, the level, and your swimmer better than anyone.

10 Steps to Put On Your Tech Suit

This is the most important part of owning a tech suit. Give yourself 15โ€“20 minutes, put on some hype music, and enjoy the process. There is no shortcut here. The ritual of suiting up is part of the race day mindset.

10 Steps to Get Race Ready

Patience is not optional. Every swimmer who races in a tech suit will tell you this. Follow the steps, and the suit will reward you. โšก

      1Dry yourself completely
      2Flip the grippers inside out
      3One foot at a time
4Pull slowly up to the knees
      5Align the seams carefully
6One inch at a time upward
      7Alternate legs as you go
      8Work it over your hips
9Light stretches to settle the suit
10Flip the grippers and race! โšก

      ๐Ÿ’› Bonus tips from SWIMSHOP2U:

      • ๐Ÿ’›Take it off slooowly after your race. Give it the same respect coming off as it did going on.
      • ๐Ÿ’›A little baby powder on your body reduces friction massively. Game changer.
      • ๐Ÿ’›Suit up in an air-conditioned room or in front of a fan. Cool, dry skin slides in so much easier.
      • ๐Ÿ’›Be patient. Every experienced tech suit swimmer will tell you: patience is part of the ritual. The ritual is part of the mindset. ๐Ÿ˜Œ

Give yourself timeBuild in 20 minutes just for the suit. Calm and focused beats flustered every time.
      ๐Ÿšป
Bathroom first!Once the suit is perfectly on, you really won't want to take it off. Go before you start.
      ๐Ÿ’…
Trim your nailsShort, smooth nails protect the fabric. A quick trim before race week is all it takes.
      ๐Ÿช’
A clean shave helpsSmooth skin slides in more easily and keeps the fabric in better shape too.
      ๐Ÿ’ง
Stay completely dryThe drier your skin, the easier and faster the suit goes on. Towel off fully.
      ๐Ÿง˜
One inch at a timeNo rushing. Every experienced swimmer learns this. It's the way.
      ๐Ÿง

      The Mental Edge

The moment you pull on a tech suit, the compression, the tightness, the way it holds your body: your mind knows it's race day. That mental shift is real and it has genuine value. Swimmers report feeling more locked in, more ready, more confident just from having the suit on. The ritual of suiting up is part of the performance. Embrace it. ๐Ÿ’ช

      Make Every Race Count

A well-cared-for tech suit is a fast tech suit. The good news is it's simple. According to Blueseventy and Swim2000, the biggest factors in tech suit longevity are chlorine removal, avoiding heat, and keeping it out of the washing machine entirely.

      ๐Ÿค Tech Suit Care Guide

๐ŸŒŠRinse immediately with cold fresh water after every race. Getting the chlorine out fast is the single most important thing you can do.
๐Ÿ–๏ธHand wash gently in cold water only. No detergent. No machine. No soaking. Press, never wring.
๐Ÿ’จAir dry flat in the shade. Direct sunlight degrades the hydrophobic coating over time. A shaded, well-ventilated spot is ideal.
โ„๏ธStore in a cool, dry place. Keeping it in the refrigerator chiller between competitions is completely fine and helps preserve the fabric and compression properties. Total pro move. ๐Ÿ‘Š
๐ŸšซNever train in your tech suit. Even a single training session will noticeably reduce its compression and water-repellent performance. Race-day only, always.

How to Find Your Size ๐Ÿ“

Getting the size right is just as important as choosing the right suit. Tech suits are meant to feel tight, but there's a difference between productive compression and a suit that's cutting off circulation. Here's how we approach sizing at SWIMSHOP2U.

      ๐Ÿ“

      Start with your hips measurement

Measure around the widest part of your hips, approximately 2 inches below your belt line. This is your primary sizing reference for a tech suit, especially for kneeskins.

Use a soft measuring tape and measure directly against your skin, not over clothing. Take the measurement twice to make sure it's consistent.

If you're between sizes, here's what we recommend:

      Ladies

Go with your hips measurement as your guide. We recommend taking a break halfway through putting it on. Work it up slowly, one section at a time. Patience is your best friend here.

      Gentlemen

Size up if you are extremely tall, have super buff quads, or just really enjoy pizza. ๐Ÿ•

The jammer needs to sit comfortably over the hip without cutting in. Your legs need room to kick.

      All Swimmers

Size down if your hips measurement is on the low end of the size range and you'd like a more compressive fit. The suit will ease slightly once you're in the water.

"Do you have a Fastskin?" ๐Ÿค”

We hear this one in our store all the time. We love it, because it means someone is interested in getting serious about their racing. But let's clear something up:

      ๐Ÿ’ก

"Fastskin" is a Speedo brand name, not a category of swimsuit

Saying "I want a Fastskin" is like saying "I want a Colgate" when you mean toothpaste, or "I want a Tupperware" when you mean any food container, or ordering "a Milo" when you just want a hot chocolate. ๐Ÿ˜„

Fastskin is Speedo's range of technical racing suits. It's a brilliant product, but "Fastskin" belongs to Speedo the same way "Dri-FIT" belongs to Nike or "Gore-Tex" belongs to W.L. Gore. Other brands make equally fast (and in some cases faster) tech suits under completely different names.

When you walk into SWIMSHOP2U and ask for a Fastskin, what you're really asking for is a technical racing suit. We carry options across multiple brands, each with their own technology, seam construction, compression profile, and price point.

      ๐Ÿท๏ธ

Questions We Hear All the Time

Great question, and one we wish more swimmers asked before buying. Here is what we always go through at SWIMSHOP2U:

๐ŸŠWhat stroke / event do you swim?Different suits suit different strokes. Sprinters often want maximum compression. Distance swimmers may prefer more flexibility.
๐Ÿ“What are your hips and height measurements? The starting point for sizing. Tech suits are sized differently from training suits. Never assume your size is the same.
๐Ÿค”Have you worn a tech suit before?First-timers benefit from slightly less aggressive compression. Veterans usually know exactly what compression level they prefer.
๐Ÿท๏ธWhat suit have you worn before, and how did it fit?If a previous suit was too tight in the shoulders or too loose in the hips, that tells us a lot about which direction to go.
๐Ÿ’ฐWhat is your budget?Tech suits range from entry-level to elite. We match you to the best suit at your price point. No pressure to overspend.
๐Ÿ“…When is the competition? If the meet is next week, delivery time matters. If it is in two months, we have space to find the perfect fit.
๐Ÿ†What level is the competition?Local development meet vs. national championships vs. international qualifier. This affects whether a bonded elite suit is warranted.
โšกMore compression or more flexibility? Some swimmers love the locked-in feeling. Others find it restrictive and perform better with a slightly more flexible fit. Both are valid.

Not sure? WhatsApp us and we will walk through it with you.

Fastskin is a brand name owned by Speedo. It refers specifically to Speedo's range of technical racing suits. It is not a generic term for all tech suits, even though it's commonly used that way in Malaysia (much like calling all toothpaste "Colgate" or all food containers "Tupperware"). When you ask for a Fastskin, what you really mean is a technical racing suit. Multiple brands make them. At SWIMSHOP2U we carry tech suits from several brands. Come in or WhatsApp us and we'll help you find the right one for your swimmer.
Bonded (ultrasonic or heat-bonded) seams are fused together with no thread and no needle. The join is nearly invisible and completely flush with the fabric. This means minimal drag at every seam. Stitched seams use flat-lock or multi-needle stitching to keep seams as flat as possible while adding some flexibility and durability. Both are World Aquatics approved. Many premium suits actually combine both: bonded panels for aerodynamics, with stitching at high-stress points for strength.
Yes. For a trained, competition-ready swimmer, a tech suit makes a measurable difference. Research suggests approximately 1โ€“3% improvement in race times. It reduces drag, compresses muscles for better body alignment, and helps you hold your form through the final metres. It doesn't create speed from nothing. It helps the speed you've already built show up fully on race day. ๐Ÿ’ช
At most local and developmental meets, yes. Training suits are perfectly fine. Always check the specific rules of your competition, as it is the swimmer's responsibility to comply. At higher-level meets (state championships, nationals, international qualifiers), World Aquatics approved suits are required so every athlete competes on a level playing field.
Use the official database: approved.swimwear.fina.org โ†—. Search by brand or model and confirm your suit is on the approved list before your meet. Takes 30 seconds.
With proper care: rinse immediately after racing, hand wash cold, air dry in shade, cool storage. Your tech suit will deliver around 8โ€“10 excellent competitive performances. Never train in it, and it will reward you with every race. ๐Ÿ†
It's about competitive level, not age. Most coaches recommend waiting until a swimmer is heading to state championships, nationals, or a qualifying meet where a personal best genuinely matters. Ask your coach. When they give you the green light, it's a real milestone. ๐Ÿ™Œ
In the USA, USA Swimming introduced a rule effective September 2020 banning full technical suits for swimmers aged 12 and under at most sanctioned meets. Under this rule, any suit with bonded or taped seams, or woven fabric extending past the hips: that suit is classified as a technical suit and is restricted. The reasons were to lower the financial burden on families and to keep the focus on the swimmer's development rather than equipment. Malaysian swimmers should always check the specific rules of their competition and governing body. Check with Malaysia Aquatics as rules may differ from USA Swimming. When in doubt, ask your coach or meet organiser. Full details: SwimOutlet's breakdown of the 12 & Under rule โ†—
Yes. Tech suits are designed to be worn tight. Most brands recommend sizing down one or even two sizes from your training suit. The suit should feel extremely snug when dry; it relaxes slightly once you're in the water. Check our full Sizing Guide for the complete breakdown including tips for ladies, gents, and what to do if you're between sizes. Or WhatsApp us your measurements and we'll give you a personal recommendation.
A kneeskin is the full one-piece technical suit for female swimmers, covering from shoulder or neck to knee and providing maximum compression coverage. A jammer is the technical suit for male swimmers, covering from the waist to just above the knee and compressing the key power muscles of the hip flexors and legs. Both are World Aquatics approved for sanctioned competition.
